Certifications

Since 1977, ASIS security certifications have set the standard for professional excellence. Recognized worldwide, the CPP, PCI, and PSP credentials provide objective proof of an individual’s professional knowledge and experience.

Why apply for the PCI?

Earning a Professional Certified Investigator (PCIⓇ) designation provides independent confirmation of your specialized skills in security investigations, including case evaluation and review of options for case management strategies. It validates your ability to collect information through the effective use of surveillance, interviews, and interrogations.

What’s on the Exam?

The PCI examination consists of 125 scored multiple-choice questions and may also contain 15 randomly distributed pre-test (unscored) questions for a total of up to 140 questions. The 2.5 hours allowed takes into consideration the review of pre-test items.

The exam covers tasks, knowledge, and skills in three primary domains that have been identified by professional investigators as required areas of competency in this field.

Eligibility

Five years of investigations experience, including at least two years in case management*

AND

A high school diploma or GED equivalent

AND

  • Be employed full-time in a security-related organization
  • Not have been convicted of any criminal offense that would reflect negatively on the security profession, ASIS, or the certification program
  • Sign and agree to abide by the ASIS Certification Code of Conduct
  • Agree to abide by the policies of the ASIS Certification programs as outlined in the Certification Handbook.

Why apply for the CPP?

The Certified Protection Professional (CPPⓇ) is considered the “gold standard” certification for security management professionals and demonstrates your knowledge and competency in seven key domains of security. Globally recognized as the standard of excellence for security management professionals.

What’s on the Exam?

The CPP exam consists of 200 scored multiple-choice questions and may contain 25 randomly distributed pre-test (unscored) questions for a total of up to 225 questions. The four hours allowed takes into consideration the review of pre-test items.

The exam covers tasks, knowledge, and skills in seven broad domains that have been identified by CPPs as the major areas involved in security management.

Eligibility

Nine (9) years of security experience*, at least three (3) years of which shall have been in responsible charge* of a security function

OR

Earned a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education and have seven (7) years of security experience*, at least three (3) years of which shall have been in responsible charge* of a security function.

AND

  • Be employed full-time in a security-related organization
  • Not have been convicted of any criminal offense that would reflect negatively on the security profession, ASIS, or the certification program
  • Sign and agree to abide by the ASIS Certification Code of Conduct
  • Agree to abide by the policies of the ASIS Certification programs as outlined in the Certification Handbook.

Why apply for the PSP?

The Physical Security Professional (PSPⓇ) credential demonstrates your knowledge in physical security assessments, application, design, and integration of physical security systems, and implementation of security measures.

What’s on the Exam?

The PSP exam consists of 125 scored multiple-choice questions and may also contain 15 randomly distributed pre-test (unscored) questions for a total of up to 140 questions. The 2.5 hours allowed takes into consideration review of pre-test items.

The exam covers tasks, knowledge, and skills in three broad domains that have been identified by PSPs as the major areas involved in physical security management.

Eligibility

Four years of progressive experience in the physical security* field.

AND

Bachelor degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher educationhave been in responsible charge* of a security function.

OR

Six years of progressive experience in the physical security* field

AND

A high school diploma, GED equivalent, or associate degree

AND

  • Be employed full-time in a security-related organization
  • Not have been convicted of any criminal offense that would reflect negatively on the security profession, ASIS, or the certification program
  • Sign and agree to abide by the ASIS Certification Code of Conduct
  • Agree to abide by the policies of the ASIS Certification programs as outlined in the Certification Handbook.

Why apply for the APP?

ASIS developed this certification program to provide the first “rung” on the security manager’s career ladder. Earning the APP will show your colleagues and supervisor that you have mastered the four domains of this APP:

  1. Security Fundamentals
  2. Business Operations
  3. Risk Management
  4. Response Management

What’s on the Exam?

The APP examination consists of 100 scored multiple-choice questions and may also contain 25 randomly distributed pre-test (unscored)  questions for a total of up to 125 questions. The exam is 2 hours long and takes into consideration the review of pre-test items. 

We are accepting APP applications, however exam scheduling will not be available until the second quarter of 2019.

Eligibility

  • Experience as a security professional in the protection of assets, in the public or private sector, criminal justice system, government intelligence, or investigative agencies. 
  • Experience with companies, associations, government, or other organizations providing services or products, including consulting firms, provided the duties and responsibilities substantively relate to the design, evaluation, and application of systems, prgrams, or equipment, or development and operation of services, for prtection of assets in the private or public sectors.
  • Experience as full-time educator on the faculity of an accredited educational institution, provided the responsibilities for courses and other duties relate primarily to knowledge areas pertinent to the management and operation of protection of assets programs in the public or private sectors. 

The chart below shows how the eligibility requirements would be altered for those holding the new APP designation.

  1. Other eligibility requirements for the CPP, PCI or PSP still need to be met (e.g., responsible charge or case management)
  2. The APP Designation would be expired if candidate obtains the CPP (you cannot hold both designations at the same time)
  3. Those who are already PCI- and/pr PSP-certified will be eligible to take the APP exam (provided they meet the requirements of the individual program)
  4. CPPs will not be permitted to take the APP exam

The submission process will begin later this Fall with the first CPP exam vouchers to be awarded in early 2019.
